Everything You Need

I saw the following sign at the local nursery. It’s true as far as it goes. I, however, would add tacos and pets.

Public Service Announcement – Online DMV Tests

Plate tectonics

My friend wanted to take the online DMV test. Her friend said it would be easier than driving to the DMV and taking the written driving test. So she plugged away on her cell phone at home. Off and on. For two days. And got nowhere slowly. The DMV’s test site was glacial when it worked. But mostly the test site stopped her cold, Often and early.

So she thought she’d use the computers at her library. Which was closed today. So we drove for 3o minutes to get to a library that was open. Logging on was a snap on the 13th attempt. She started the test, which stopped. For minutes on end. So. Many. Times. The stock market closed before she finished the test. From pillar to post, the test took her three hours. It took 30 minutes. So in total,  the online test took four hours*, which is officially slower than plate tectonics.

All in all, I have to say, I was unimpressed.

* = You could have six colonoscopies in that time.**

** = To be fair, the online DMV test is discernably more pleasant.

Now you know.

The Great Latch Hook Project – Part 3

I started this latch hook project mostly for eye therapy–to help them work together better–and to aid my manual dexterity. I also hoped to have fun with it. I am happy to say that I’m getting better and am having more fun as a I go along. I do some work at home and once a week at a  library with a sewing-and-knitting group.

There’s around 8,600 squares to fill in, so I will take some months. And here’s what it looks life so far:

What I Did Today

My time on Mars was necessarily brief

1) Woke up. The streak continues. Go me!

2) Showered, Cleanliness is next to godliness.

3) Renewed CD.

4) Briefly contemplated the infinite.

5) Went to monthly massage therapy. She spent much more time on my head and neck than usual because I walked into a window at last week’s craft class.

5b) If you’re wondering does walking into a window hurt, the answer is yes.

6) Ate lunch.

7) Went to the library for this week’s crafts session. Made progress on my latch-hook project.

8) Did not walk into a window at any time.

9) Help with friend’s CD question.

10) Used extra-springy trampoline to bounce my way to Mars.

11) Had to return to Earth right away as I can only hold my breath so long.

12) Fortunately, NASA had left a trampoline on Mars during its last mission there.

13) Bounced my way back to Earth. Boy, did I take a big gulp of air!

14) Ordered some place markers for the Great Latch Hook Project.

15) Made quesadillas for the natives.

Behave yourselves.

The Great Latch Hook Project

January 21, 2024

I have a latch hook kit. This is supposed to be therapy for my eyes which at times don’t work well together. Latch hooking is supposed to help with my manual dexterity.

I started doing this at an arts-and-crafts session at a public library. It took me 30 minutes before I got thread in one of those little squares. A fellow crafter help me a lot in getting the hang of it.

However, there was some sadness in Mudville. The kit comes with a chart that tells what color yarn and its number. But there was silence on what the colors look like. Do you know the difference between Blue Jewel and Periwinkle? I didn’t.

I’ve just spent maybe three hours to sort out the colors.  Eventually, I discovered that Dark Green is 654 and Forest Green is 689. That left: Forest Green 689, Dark Green 654, Blue Jewel 818, and Periwinkle 831 to be pinned down.

I looked up the company on the internet. However, it altered its name some after I got the kit about 25 years ago. They also apparently changed their codes over the years. I got some of the codes through exhaustive and exhausting research. I now know that forest green is darker than dark green,. Egad, I feel like watching a murder mystery tonight.

I’m getting better. I can do 90 squares a hour. With a latch-hook mat comprising  8,000 squares, the whole project shall take about 90 hours. The world shall sigh in relief as this will keep off the streets where I would only foment revolution and no one wants that.

My Day

My local library is smaller than this

Sometimes time gets away from me. I almost forgot to post!

Yesterday, I found out how difficult it was to find, buy, and take home a latch hook.

This morning, I discovered how hard it was to find where I put my latch hook.

I looked for hours for it, but to no avail.

I looked on line on Amazon, etc. and found nothing that could get to me in time.

While doing this, I dealt with a hacking or virus attack. This is why I wasn’t on the streets fighting crime.

Okay, I stopped a bank robbery, but that was only for a few minutes.

Hoorah! I found the latch hook. It was in the back of the car, in a flexible cooler with two ice packs.

Had lunch.

Went to a library arts-and-crafst get together. I learned to use my latch hook. I did! I did! I’m going to make a latch-hook rug of Charlie Brown.(tm)

I drove home in a horrible rain storm. Whew.

Made meatloaf for dinner.

Watched Seinfeld and two mysteries.

Checked to see if the Earth is still rotating in the right direction. It is.

Writing this blog and will go to sleep soon.

Good night.

Paul’s Awesome English Dictionary – Today’s Word: Bloval

We’ve all done pointless, but difficult things. Perhaps it was completely filling in the “o”s i  War and Peace. Perhaps it was balancing an egg. Perhaps it was balancing an egg on its pointy end. The skill and determination needed to bring these efforts to a success are truly worthy of our praise, if only they weren’t so useless.

But we don’t have a word to describe these utterly unimportant achievements.

It’s high time to correct this oversight.

TODAY’S AWESOME WORD

Loving Poem About Baseball and the Time Space Continuum

Baseball

I practiced baseball
with my son yesterday,
I hit a ball so high
that it never came down.
Oh dear, I think
I’ve destroyed the
time-space continuum.

We may have only one day
left of existence.
On the plus side,
you won’t need to worry
about your overdue
library books.
