The Great Pennant Race We’re Not Having

As it stands, the American League essentially plays 1,215 games to determine the SIXTH best team. The top four teams remain virtually certain of making the playoffs. A good number of ball clubs are not likely to gain a playoff berth. With 6 – to – 10 teams not battling for the three wild-card spots fans really won’t care in what position their favorites finish. It didn’t use to be that way, sixth place was clearly better than seventh or eighth.

But maybe the current six-team play off format is yielding tons of tons of excitement.

No. Boston, the seventh best squad is 3.5 games out of the last playoff spot.

However, if the top teams in the league were to be in a single division, only-the-best-club goes to the World Series system we’d a truly crackerjack pennant race.

I would sit by my phone waiting for the American League to call me on this, but alas I don’t think they will.

But please look at the following comparison:

Paul’s Awesome English Dictionary: Today’s Word – Expirace

How many times has this happened to you? You go to the store to get milk, tomatoes, cheese, lettuce, and other perishables. Will you work all these foods into wholesome meals for your family before your produce and such pass their expiration dates and go bad? No. But still you try. You find yourself concocting ever wilder meals in your race to use up all your perishables. Remember your avocado, peach, lettuce, tomato, kale, sour cream, sausage link cobbler?

If only there were a word to describe this race. And now we have.

TODAY’S AWESOME WORD

Fun Festivals – Nanaimo Marine Festival and Bathtub Races

Future contestant in training

The Nanaimo Marine Festive is held every year in Nanaimo, Canada near the end of July. So we missed it again. Bummer. But boy, we will sure be ready for next year. As always, there will be amazing firework displays, decorations, and food everywhere. Arts and crafts stalls will dot the landscape, as well an entertainment stage, and a children’s tent. Visit the farmers’ markets, and do other stuff.

Let’s face it the highlight of this festival is, and will always, be the stupendous bathtub race. It’s known appropriately enough as the Great International World Championship Bathtub Race. The race crosses the 36-mile Strait of Georgia. Take that, marathoners. Bathtubs for the event run about $3,000. Each bathtub gets an 8-horsepower motor. This race has been held now for about fifty years and is overseen by the Royal Nanaimo Bathtub Society, as well an exciting event like this should be.

Just remember:

1) Bathtub race
2) 36 miles
3) Outboard motor
4) July

See you then.
