Paul’s Awesome English Dictionary: Today’s Word – Frimp

How many times has this happened to you? Either your GPS has broken down or you just didn’t bother with directions. The Sun went down two hours ago. You don’t know which way to go?  You get out of the care to answer the call of nature, when suddenly you see an imp not five feet away. How the heck did it get so close? You notice that is imp is carrying an axe. Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, you are going to die! You’re gonna die. Then the most amazing thing occurs. The imp carefully lays down its axe. He smiles at you. His name is Ian, Ian the Imp. He asks you to play charades. Ian does not get many opportunities to play charades. You play the game with him. Until dawn. You become friends.

If only there were a word to describe this new friend. And now we have.

Paul’s Awesome English Dictionary: Today’s Word – Porphin

Endorphins are peptides produced in the brain that block the perception of pain and increase feelings of wellbeing.

Life can be hard. People can be let us down and be downright mean to us. Illnesses make us depressed.

We need to do and see things stymy that perception of pain and make us feel better.

Endorphins in our brain do just that. Unleash the kraken! Oops, no.

Unleash the endorphins!

How do we accomplish that? Transform some object, entity, or feeling that saddens us into something that makes us happy.

What brings us down? Orphan socks. For example, a single sock adorned with delightful hula dancers.

What makes us happy? Uniting two ORPan socks to reconstitute a Pair of socks.

Now, we’re cooking with gas. Let the great endORPHIN event begin.

If only there were a word to describe this endorphin flood. And now we have.

Paul’s Awesome English Dictionary: Today’s Word – Biobe

There are so many tiny things in the world! How are we expected to know what they’re called? And single-cell organisms, why they’re are billion types of them. We can’t possible know and remember their names. And why should we care? Because biology professors test our knowledge of them. Because the CDC puts out bulletins about how to avoid some deadly virus, bacteria, whatever, but we can’t remember what the CDC called what. Then newscasters terrify us with the latest terrifying microscopic thing. The newscasters won’t remember the name either, but they will have scared the bejeebus out of us, just the same.

We need a name to describe little thingamabobs. And now we have.

Paul’s Awesome English Dictionary: Today’s Word – Snof

We’ve all done this. We’ve spent hours on the computer playing solitaire, posting 62 times on Facebook(tm), or solving the day’s Wordle(tm) puzzle. Finally virtue and common sense rear their beautiful head. We turn off the computer. Instantly, fleeting, brilliant thoughts erupt with the ferocity of Pompeii’s volcano.  You hastily restart the computer. It takes time. Will you forget your awesome, clever thoughts before your computer finishes rebooting?

Paul’s Awesome English Dictionary: Today’s Word – Pqfkqpltw

Foreign words can be difficult to pronounce. Words that we’ve never seen before are also hard to say correctly, such as ‘”reconnaissance” was for eight-year old me. Sure, we could say, “That word is hard to pronounce.” However, that is a sentence, of six words no less. What if we want to say that in just one word, one that evokes the difficulty of a nearly unpronounceable word?
