Hire a Cat Editor

Every writer knows editing isn’t fun. So we take our time getting it done. So we put it off to tomorrow, next month, and finally we find ourselves on the other side of the rainbow bridge and it’ll be too late. Our dog Sparky will be there. His tail isn’t wagging. “Your book would have been the greatest book ever. It would have brought happiness to hundreds of millions, but you never got past the editing. ”

“I should have hired someone,” I mumbled.

“No, not someone,” says Sparky. “You should have hired a cat for the editing.”

“I thought you didn’t like cats.”

“I didn’t. But they make the best editors. They demand perfection. You have to earn their approval.”

“I’m sorry, Sparky, I messed up.”

“That’s okay.” His tail commenced wagging. “I could never stay mad at you. Want to throw a ball for me?”

I muttered, “I don’t have a ball.”

Blip. A red ball appeared in my hand.

“There’s always balls for fetching in Heaven,” said Sparky.

“And increased canine vocabularies,” I said.

“That too,” said Sparky.

And we laughed and laughed.

Why Editors Are Important, #1

Understanding foreign languages can be quite difficult. So, it’s probably a good thing to hire an editor who knows multiple languages.

This really happened. An early edition of the King James Bible urged the faithful to commit adultery. King James was not amused and fined the publishers rather heavily. If only they had hired an editor. Be an editor! Keep the world moral.

Why Editors Are Important – #1, Trump Awards . . .

Whoa, I wouldn’t expect to get much production out of a company that has been given $1.3. Suppose the CEO gets a coffee from the company cafeteria for $1.25. Subtract that from the award of $1.30 and you get a nickel. The company’s research and development department would burn through five cents in particularly no time at all. And then the project would necessarily shut down for lack of funds.

I know, I know, if you read further, the article does say $1.3 B, which makes the shock value of getting nothing in return somewhat greater that it would be for $1.30. Still, that’s what the headline said and it made me smile.
